Success Stories

Javier Miramontes

Javier enrolled in the Empower Program on 10/02/06. He was interested in attending Merced Community College and eventually majoring in Journalism. Javier is an intense and concerned citizen of the U.S. He finds the government issues both fascinating and frustrating. He is learning early what interests him and what stands he chooses to take. Javier shows his displays his love of journalism with the blogs he writes on ‘myspace’.

Javier was told he could not attend UC Merced because of financial aid issues. He was told his mother would have to take out a parent loan, and she just couldn’t tackle that at this time. Javier was devastated and climbed into a hole to ponder the barrier that had been thrown up blocking his expectations, and dreams of attending the University. Javier was reduced to attending the Merced Community college and put off any hopes of attending a university. That’s when he joined the Empower Program. After attending all workshops and completing the enrollment process, Javier shared his dream and fall to me regarding the UC Merced. In the Empower Program Javier was encouraged to visit UC Student Body President, Josh Franco Josh in turn referred Javier to a counselor and admissions person on campus. Much to Javier’s delight he was accepted as a student of Merced UC and all things that followed lead to his first class which he attended yesterday Jan. 12, 2007.

By most standards Empower would not consider Javier a success story at this point, however Javier disagrees!

Javier feels like if it weren’t for the Empower Program he would still be in bed sleeping all day, disillusioned, and disappointed about not being accepted to UC Merced. He thanks the Empower program for encouraging him through powerful motivation to pursue the financial aid issues and setting him up with the right people at the University.

Congratulations Javier!

I believe Johnathon will continue to be a ‘Success Story”.
